ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Albuquerque city councilors voted 8-1 late Monday to suspend operations of the Police Oversight Commission until a new oversight agency is created.

Most of the POC’s membership has already resigned, and the council is debating the creation of a new agency with broader powers.

Under Monday’s bill, the independent review officer will continue to investigate citizens’ complaints against police, and her work can be reviewed by a hearing officer if requested.

Don Harris was the lone “no” vote.
