Zozobra ticket sales hit 10,000

SANTA FE – Pre-event ticket sales for tonight’s burning of Zozobra are at about 10,000 – far more than at any time in the event’s 90-year history.

“We’ve never seen anything like this,” said Ray Sandoval, who organizes the event put on annually by the Kiwanis Club of Santa Fe.

Sandoval said last year’s pre-sale was only about 1,000, and more than 30,000 people attended the event at Fort Marcy Park.

He declined to speculate how many would attend this year, but said they’re ready for just about anything.

“We’ve been planning this for 18 months,” he said.

This is the first time since 1997 that Zozobra will burn on a Friday night.

The event was moved to Thursday after that because of a shooting on Santa Fe’s Plaza that left one young man dead and two others injured.
