Some highlights from the first week of the prep soccer season:
BOSQUE SCHOOL: The boys opened up with a 5-0 win against Piedra Vista and had five goal scorers. They followed that up by beating Los Alamos 2-0 on Tuesday.
The girls on Tuesday outlasted Los Alamos 3-2 in overtime, with Georgia Gray getting the game-winner in the 85th minute.
CIBOLA: The Cougar boys opened Monday in the Albuquerque Metro Championships, blowing out Del Norte 5-0. Zech Meddleton had two goals for Cibola. On Wednesday, Cibola shut out Eldorado 3-0, backed by two goals from Sergio Rivas.
Cibola’s girls beat Valley 4-0 on Tuesday in a metro opener. On Thursday, the Cougars drew 1-1 with defending 5A state champion Eldorado.
CLEVELAND: The Storm girls opened by blanking Oñate 7-0 in Las Cruces. Audriana Chavez had a spectacular start to the year, scoring five goals and adding an assist for Cleveland.
Chavez the next day added two goals and an assist in a 3-1 win over Las Cruces High.
In the first round of the metro tournament, the Storm battered Manzano 10-0. There was another 10-0 result Wednesday in the second round against Del Norte.
The boys tied Las Cruces last Saturday, 0-0. In the first round of the metro tournament, Atrisco Heritage nipped the Storm boys 2-1 Monday.
Ben Brewer had the lone goal Wednesday for the Storm in a 1-0 victory over Albuquerque Academy.
RIO RANCHO: The girls dominated Albuquerque Academy 6-0 on Monday in the opening round of the metro event at the APS Complex.
Imani Morlock had two goals to pace the Rams.
In the second round of pool play Wednesday, Rio Rancho defeated Sandia 1-0, with Sophie Rodrigues’ goal in the 15th minute holding up.
The Rio Rancho boys were edged 2-1 on Thursday by Highland in the metro tournament.
ST. PIUS: At the Aztec tournament, the Sartan girls blanked Piedra Vista 3-0, then routed Aztec’s No. 2 squad 10-0.
In the finals, St. Pius doubled up on Aztec’s varsity side 4-2 in a rematch of November’s Class 4A state championship game. Vanessa Hernandez tallied twice for St. Pius, with Samantha Afonso and Maddi Waszak also scoring.
St. Pius trailed 2-0 at halftime.
The boys were beaten 6-2 by Los Lunas on Tuesday in their opener, and fell 7-0 to Sandia Prep on Thursday.
VALLEY: Sandia downed Valley’s boys 2-0 on Tuesday in the metro tournament’s opening round.
The girls beat Rio Grande 5-0 on Thursday, with Vanessa Mejia and Mackenna Havenor each scoring two goals for the Vikings.
VOLCANO VISTA: The girls easily downed West Mesa 7-0 on Tuesday in a metro tournament opener. The seven goals came from seven players.
On Thursday, La Cueva nipped Volcano Vista’s girls 2-1.
WEST MESA: The boys gave up a late goal, losing 2-1 to Sandia on Thursday in the metro tournament.
