Teaching Task Force Seeking Comments

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Teachers, parents and other community members are invited to give public comment Tuesday on teacher and principal evaluation, recruitment, retention, training and compensation.

The New Mexico Effective Teaching Task Force, which was created by executive order, has been meeting all summer to discuss ways to overhaul the state’s teacher evaluation system. Specifically, the task force is charged with developing an evaluation system that is at least 50 percent based on student outcomes.

The task force is headed by state Secretary of Education-designate Hanna Skandera and includes teachers, parents, superintendents and legislators from around the state. Gov. Susana Martinez created the task force through executive order after the failure of a bill that would have created it legislatively.

The public can comment in person from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in Santa Fe, or can submit written comments to teacher.evaluation@state.nm.us. The deadline for written comment is 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The task force’s recommendations are due to Martinez by Aug. 22.
