A former New Mexico judge was found injured in his office Friday evening, and state police said he was battered by an unknown assailant.
Thomas Fitch, who is in his late 60s, was found in his office in Socorro around 7:30 p.m. on Friday, said State Police spokesman Joseph Lovato. The extent or type of Fitch’s injuries are unknown, he said, but the former judge was still hospitalized as of Saturday evening.
A UNM Hospital spokesman said the hospital is not allowed to release any information about Fitch.
The investigation is ongoing, and police have been reluctant to provide many details.
Fitch was the chief judge of the 7th Judicial District and served in Socorro until 2005 when he was convicted of drunken driving. The judge continued his law practice in Socorro after the conviction.
