Motorcyclist Dies in Crash on St. Michael’s Drive

Alcohol may have been involved in a fatal crash on St. Michael’s Drive Wednesday evening that left a 40-year-old motorcyclist dead, according to Santa Fe police.
A search warrant was drafted to have the blood drawn from the 52-year-old female driver of the van that hit the male motorcyclist on a street near Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, according to Santa Fe police Capt. Aric Wheeler.
It is unknown whether the motorcyclist had been drinking, but the motorcycle was carrying a 12-pack of beer.
Wheeler would not elaborate on why police suspect the van driver may have had alcohol in her system.
“They felt there was enough (information) to get a search warrant for the van driver’s blood,” Wheeler said.
The motorcyclist, who was from Santa Fe, died at the scene, Wheeler said. The van driver had minor scrapes and bruises and declined medical treatment, he said.
The crash occurred just after 7 p.m. at the intersection of St. Michael’s Drive and Botulph Road, a street that turns into Hospital Drive. The motorcyclist was traveling east on St. Michael’s as the westbound van was making a left turn onto Botulph, in front of the bike.
The motorcyclist braked, but could not avoid impact. The rider then slid under the van and “made a lot of impact” while doing so, according to Wheeler.
The motorcyclist had the right-of-way at the time of the crash, according to the police captain.
Neither of their names were released as of late Wednesday.
