Lyons Says Balderas Mishandled PRC Allegations

SANTA FE (AP) — Public Regulation Commission chairman Pat Lyons is criticizing State Auditor Hector Balderas for his handling of allegations of possible misconduct at the regulatory agency.

Lyons, a Republican, said Tuesday the Democratic state auditor’s office didn’t respond to notices by the PRC in 2009 and 2010 about problems with PRC employees such as questionable travel reimbursements.

Balderas disagreed, saying his office reviewed the issues and some led to audit findings.

Lyons said the auditor’s office should undergo an outside review. Balderas described Lyons’ criticisms as “hostile and misguided accusations.”

Balderas and Lyons traded barbs last week over a planned audit of PRC travel and gasoline transactions. The audit relates to allegations of misconduct by Democratic PRC member Jerome Block Jr., who is under investigation by the Attorney General’s Office.
