Guacamalla Fire Allowed To Burn

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Residents from north of Albuquerque to Jemez Springs are expected to see a significant increase in smoke from the Guacamalla Fire, burning about five miles east of Ponderosa, today through Friday.

Fire officials have allowed the lightning-caused fire, which began Aug. 17, to burn across the ground in an effort to reduce fuels that could create a hotter, more severe fire in the future.

About 40 acres adjacent to the fire were burned Monday to manage the fire’s direction, and fire managers will begin burning up to 700 acres in and around the fire today to help shut down the blaze.

Because of current moisture levels in the forest, the fire has been burning slowly with a low spread potential. It has burned about 693 acres in a remote area north of Forest Road 266 and south of Forest Road 271.
