Man Burns Santa Fe Gas Pump To See What It Looks Like

........................................................................................................................................................................................

A man who told police he set a Santa Fe service station gasoline pump on fire “to see what it looks like when a gas pump goes up in flames” was arrested early Friday after a fire on the parking lot of the Smith’s supermarket at 2308 Cerrillos Rd.

Miguel Adrian Carlos-Flores, 25, was arrested when police were called to the Smith’s gas station, in front of the supermarket, about 12:30 a.m. Officers found a fuel pump fully engulfed in flames, said police Capt. Aric Wheeler.

A witness directed the police to the India House restaurant across the street, where a man was breaking windows and possibly trying to start another fire. That’s where Carlos-Flores was found and arrested.

He’s charged with two counts of arson, one count of criminal damage to property and one count of concealing identity, the last charge for failing to properly identify himself initially, according to Wheeler.

Surveillance video from the Smith’s gas station confirmed that Carlos-Flores was the arsonist, Wheeler said. Carlos-Flores put the nozzle from the pump onto a trash can and lit the trash, and the fire eventually spread to the pump. Wheeler said the suspect said he just wanted to see what a burning fuel pump looked like.

The two arson counts are for burning the trash can and the pump, Wheeler said. No fire was started at the India House.
