SANTA FE – Police were investigating a possible homicide Sunday evening after a man’s body was found in a river bed near a downtown park.
Police received a call about 7 p.m. from someone who said they spotted the body in the Santa Fe River in front of De Vargas Park and near the state Department of Labor, according to police Chief Aric Wheeler. Investigators had not positively identified the man as of 8:30 p.m., but said he appeared to be in his 30s, Wheeler said. The police chief said they had not yet been able to examine the body for injuries. The body was covered in dirt and the scene was wet after rain hit the city Saturday night and early Sunday evening. Wheeler said police could not determine right away whether foul play was suspected, but said they are investigating the situation as a homicide.
