Tim Gunn has made his mark in the fashion world – and he’s coming to New Mexico.

Gunn, co-host of fashion design reality series “Project Runway,” will make an appearance on Saturday at the Lucky Brand Jeans shop at ABQ Uptown.

Gunn says the meet-and-greet event at ABQ Uptown will be a scaled-down version of a fashion show and book signing.

“From what I’m told, we’re not able to have a fashion show because the space is small,” he explains during an interview from San Diego. “But I’ll address the crowd and there will be plenty of time for face-to-face time with the fans.”

While Gunn has globe-trotted around the world, his trip to the Land of Enchantment won’t be his first.

Gunn, for a number of years, was the art and design examiner for the International Baccalaureate Program at the Armand Hammer United World College of the American West in Montezuma, just north of Las Vegas, N.M.

“I’ve driven through a lot of the state and spent a good amount of time in New Mexico,” he says. “It’s a gorgeous, stunning state and every time I’ve been there, I’ve felt this overwhelming spirituality and there is something calming about it.”

Gunn skyrocketed to fame with “Project Runway” in 2004 and became one of the breakout stars as well as a mentor to all of the contestants.

“From the fourth or fifth challenge onward, there is a special place,” he says. “When the finalists are chosen, they do become my kids and I get really mad at the judges for attacking them.”

Gunn admits that in the past two seasons of the show, his frustration has grown with the judges not being consistent and even got in trouble last season after he referred to the judges as “crack smokers.”

“I see part of my role as being able to anticipate what the judges would probably say and I feel incapable of it now,” he says. “The designers and I make a joke about it now. All I tell the designers now is to be confident in the outfit you send down the runway and don’t anticipate anything.”
