Interior Secretary in N.M. for Enactment of Water Settlement

Interior Secretary Ken Salazar and Native American leaders are celebrating the enactment of a settlement that ends a decades-long water rights battle in northern New Mexico.

Salazar visited Santa Fe on Thursday morning for the celebration.

He’s in New Mexico as part of a swing through Western states to rally more support for an effort to get county and state officials throughout the West to recommend areas for potential wilderness designation.

The Aamodt water rights settlement was one of four included in legislation signed by President Barack Obama earlier this year that will help deliver clean drinking water to tribes in New Mexico, Arizona and Montana.

The Aamodt settlement provides for the construction of a regional water system to serve Tesuque, Nambe, Pojoaque and San Ildefonso pueblos.
