Mexican National Convicted of Illegal Re-Entry

........................................................................................................................................................................................

A federal jury in Las Cruces on Tuesday found Armando Lozano-Morales, 40, guilty of illegally re-entering the United States after having been deported in 2003, the U.S. Attorney’s Office said in a news release.

The jury deliberated for two hours before finding Lozano-Morales guilty following a two-day trial.

Lozano-Morales, who has been in federal custody since Sept. 13, 2010, remained behind bars pending his sentencing hearing, which has yet to be scheduled, the release said. He faces up to 20 years in prison, followed by three years of supervised release and a $250,000 fine.

According to U.S. Attorney Kenneth Gonzales, evidence at trial determined that Lozano-Morales was interviewed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents after he was arrested by Sunland Park police on Sept. 11, 2010.

Lozano-Morales admitted to ICE officers that he was a Mexican citizen without any U.S. immigration status, and a further review of immigration records found that Lozano-Morales had been deported to Mexico on Oct. 10, 2003 and had not obtained permission to re-enter the United States, federal prosecutors said.
