LUBBOCK, Texas — A man accused of leading a West Texas drug trafficking ring must serve nearly 21 years in prison.

A federal judge in Lubbock on Friday sentenced 27-year-old Rodney Pena Mendez, in an investigation going back to 2008 drug deals. Prosecutors say Mendez, known as “Pee Wee,” was the head of a methamphetamine and marijuana trafficking organization based in San Angelo.

Mendez in July pleaded guilty to conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute methamphetamine.

Prosecutors say Mendez was among eight people from San Angelo who were indicted in May and eventually pleaded guilty to drug-related counts.
