Nonprofit group First Choice Community Healthcare moves to newly renovated building
Bernalillo County and state officials this week celebrated the opening of a new health clinic that will serve both the insured and uninsured in Barelas, South Broadway and the South Valley.
The nonprofit group First Choice Community Healthcare moved into the newly renovated building at 1401 William SE on Thursday. The new location is twice as big as First Choice’s previous clinic.
The South Broadway Health Center will offer mental health services; federally funded nutrition programs for women, infants and children; and other care.
“This is not a luxury,” state Sen. Eric Griego, D-Albuquerque, said. “This is about basic health care.”
County Commissioner Art De La Cruz said the 16,000-square-foot building will allow First Choice to serve more people. It’s a great example of the county working well with other agencies, such as the state and federal governments, he said.
State Sen. Gerald Ortiz y Pino, D-Albuquerque, said that more clinics are needed, given the waiting lists to see doctors.
“With national health reform under way, we’re going to need many more facilities like this,” he said.
The new health center is in what had been an abandoned state building. Renovations cost about $3.2 million, with federal stimulus funding helping to pay for it.
