SWAT Standoff Ends With Arrest

........................................................................................................................................................................................

A standoff near E.J. Martinez Elementary School ended Wednesday when the mother of a man police thought may have been holding hostages opened the front door to her home and let SWAT team members enter and take her son into custody.

The incident began when a burglar alarm went off around 6:15 a.m. on Calle Preciosa, at a house separated from the school by a stone wall.

According to Santa Fe Police Department spokesman Lt. Louis Carlos, officers arrived on the scene and were told by a man at the house “to leave or he’d start shooting and killing cops. Then he ran into the house.”

Officers cordoned off the area, and E.J. Martinez was placed on lockdown until the incident ended around 10 a.m. Carlos said police saw a woman in the home who “was making motions to the officers to be quiet, putting her finger to her lips and telling officers to leave when they were trying to communicate.” SWAT was called in and a negotiator reached the woman inside by telephone. She eventually agreed to let the SWAT team inside and the man was taken into custody. The woman was the man’s mother, Carlos said, and the two live together.

The man was taken to Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center for a mental evaluation, Carlos said. Carlos would not release the man’s name because any charges are being delayed until officers receive the results of the evaluation.

“The gentleman has a lengthy history of our department dealing with him,” Carlos said. “We’ve taken him into custody for mental evaluation in the past.” None of those previous instances was similar to this situation, Carlos said.

The man was not armed and no weapons were found in his home, Carlos said. The alarm was tripped when a window was broken from the inside, he said.
