The U.S. Capitol’s 2011 Christmas tree — a 63-foot-high, 118-year-old Sierra White fir harvested from the Stanislaus National Forest in California — will be making a stop in Santa Fe today.

The tree is on a cross-country tour by truck on its way to Washington, D.C., and is scheduled to be on display at the Santa Fe Place mall today from 1 to 4 p.m.

The U.S. Forest Service will be displaying the tree on a 90-foot flatbed truck. Smokey Bear will make an appearance at 2:30 p.m.

The big fir weighs 8,300 pounds, is 21 inches in diameter at the base of its trunk and is 23 feet wide at the base of its crown. After it’s decorated in Washington, its lights will be turned on Dec. 6.
