Cibola, La Cueva Face Off Tonight

It sounds like baseball, but isn’t: Let’s play two.

The 2011-12 high school basketball season begins for most everyone tonight around the metro area, with boys/girls varsity doubleheaders scheduled at nine different gyms. Tipoffs are at 5:30 and 7 p.m. The boys go early at some sites, the girls are the first game at the others.

There are two boys matchups of note.

Cibola is at La Cueva at 5:30 p.m., as the Cougars put one of their best teams on the floor in many years.

The Bears are not nearly at full strength, since their posts, Justin Griego and Calvin Allen, only completed their football obligations with the Bears on Friday.

Atrisco Heritage Academy visits Albuquerque High at 7 p.m., the first of two games in the next week between these two. The next is Monday in the first round of the metro tournament, at AHA.

Also of note: Highland visits Cleveland at 7 p.m.; the Storm’s point guard, Jason Jackson, is a transfer from Highland.

♦ For the girls, Cibola is one of a handful of teams that could challenge for a 5A title in the spring; the Cougars follow the boys at 7 p.m. at La Cueva, which is in rebuild mode after being hit hard by graduation.

One of the more interesting games tonight features Volcano Vista at Del Norte, at 7 p.m.

♦ Other opening-night twinbills: Moriarty at Manzano (boys at 5:30), Santa Fe at West Mesa (boys at 5:30), Eldorado at Rio Grande (girls at 5:30), Sandia at Rio Rancho (girls at 5:30) and Albuquerque Academy at Valley (boys at 5:30).
