Customs and Border Protection officers at two ports of entry along the U.S.-Mexico border seized nearly 1,500 pounds of marijuana in separate busts, the El Paso Times reported.

Just before 1 p.m. Friday at the Santa Teresa port of entry, a 2007 Chevrolet Avalanche with a family of five approached from Mexico, and an officer using a density meter noticed the possible presence of contraband while a drug-sniffing dog alerted officers to 260 bundles of marijuana weighing a total of 582 pounds, officials told the Times.

Hugo Antonio Iguanzo Olivas, 36, of Cuauhtemoc, Chihuahua, was arrested and turned over to Homeland Security agents on federal drug charges, while his wife and three children were released, the paper reported.

Just after 10 p.m. Saturday, officers at the Bridge of the Americas between El Paso and Juarez found 690 marijuana-filled bundles on a bus traveling from Mexico, the Times said.

The marijuana, weighing a total of 878 pounds, was found in a compartment near the bus’s restroom, and officers arrested Miguel Angel Huchin Magana, 46, of Celaya, Guanajuato, then cleared the rest of the passengers to continue with their trip, according to the Times.
