Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center is 400 inmates over capacity
Some inmates at the Bernalillo County Metropolitan Detention Center in Albuquerque could get out early because the jail holds too many people.
The county’s deputy manager for public safety, Tom Swisstack, said inmates jailed for less serious offenses may be better served by non-jail options.
KOAT television said Swisstack suggested such alternatives as ankle bracelets that track people in real time.
Swisstack also said substance abuse and community custody programs could also help low-level offenders.
County Commissioner Wayne Johnson said he’d like to consider options for nonviolent, non-felony offenses.
He said it could save the county money.
Swisstack said alternatives could drop the jail’s population below capacity for the first time in years.
He said the jail currently is 400 inmates over capacity.
