Corrales Awarded $2,000 Tourism Grant

........................................................................................................................................................................................

The New Mexico Department of Tourism has awarded a Corrales group $2,000 to help entice tourists to visit the village.

Corrales MainStreet, which is part of the national MainStreet organization, applied for the grant to help promote the 2012 Corrales Art Studio Tour, according the group’s spokeswoman Judith Newby. The grant must be used for advertising in markets that are at least 75 miles from an event location.

The self-guided tour takes place every year in late April or early May and features art from Corrales and other area artists. During the tour, village art studios display the work of these artists. The artists are also available to discuss their works, which include paintings, prints, ceramics, furniture, jewelry and photography.

Newby said the idea is to bring people to the village from outside the area.

“We will advertise outside the state,” she said. “We want people to see what Corrales has to offer.”

MainStreet’s focus is to help with the economic development and success of businesses in small towns and villages across the country. In Corrales, the group sponsors local annual events including the Fourth of July and Starlight parades as well as promoting local businesses.

Newby said the studio tour not only benefits the artists but the village, too.

“You are bringing people into our village who will stay at our bed and breakfasts, dine in our restaurants,” she said. “And hopefully shop in some of our unique stores.”
