The crew of the USS New Mexico has a special message for the state.
All 127 crew members of the Virginia-class submarine are extending their birthday wishes via an online video in recognition of New Mexico’s 100 years of statehood.
The submarine’s commanding officer and the Navy League’s New Mexico committee came up with the idea for the video greeting.
The 12-second clip comes as the state gets ready to kick off its centennial celebration on Friday.
The USS New Mexico was commissioned in March 2010. The technology-laden ship can dive to depths greater than 800 feet, operate at speeds topping 25 knots and remain submerged for three months.
In a nod to the state, it also features Southwest-style bunk and passageway curtains and large photographs of New Mexico landscapes and hot air balloons.
