Incumbents Seeking Re-Election In Rio Rancho

........................................................................................................................................................................................

Tuesday was the date for candidates to file the required paperwork with the city clerk.
The contests will be for council Districts 1, 4 and 6. Voters will also have to make decisions on nine proposed charter revisions that will be on the ballot on March 6.
Councilor Michael Williams is seeking reelection to the District 1 seat in southern Rio Rancho. Williams has represented since 2000, with a short break in late 2007 and early 2008 when he served as mayor after former Mayor Kevin Jackson resigned.

His opponent is longtime council critic Chuck Wilkins.

The contest for District 4 in central Rio Rancho will be a three-way race between incumbent Steve Shaw, a former Rio Rancho deputy police chief, businessman Mark Scott and retired Rio Rancho police officer Roberta Radosevich. She is the wife of former city councilor Robert Radosevich.
The District 6 race attracted four candidates; Kathy Colley, the incumbent, Marilyn Salzman, Alonzo Clayton and Helene Apper.
Salzman represented District 6 from 2004 to 2008. She and Colley were the top vote-getters among five candidates vying for the seat in the 2008 election.
Colley defeated Salzman in a runoff election. City rules require a runoff in races with three or more candidates if no one wins more than 50 percent of the votes.
Clayton ran unsuccessfully for the District 6 seat in 2008 and in 2004, when he lost to Salzman. He also ran in the 2002 mayoral race, which Jim Owen won.
Apper has spoken at City Council meetings opposing development at the La Plazuela site west of the Sandoval County Judicial Complex at N.M. 528 and Idalia. Apper lives in the Vista Entrada neighborhood north and west of the site.
