House panel rejects mandatory leave for teacher-legislators

........................................................................................................................................................................................

A proposal to require that teachers who serve in the Legislature take either annual leave or unpaid leave when they’re on legislative business was narrowly defeated today in the House Voters and Elections Committee.

The proposed constitutional change was rejected on a 7-6 party line vote, with Democrats voting against the proposal and Republicans for it.

GOP lawmakers said teachers and others whose salaries come from public money should not get both their salaries and expense reimbursement from the Legislature.

But opponents said the proposal was too broad, and could have impacted others in the Legislature — lawyers, for example, whose firms have contracts with government agencies.
