CARLSBAD (AP) — There are plenty of openings inside the Eddy County adult detention center. The problem appears to be a lack of interest in filling guard positions at the southeastern New Mexico facility.
The Carlsbad Current-Argus reports the jail is down about 15 detention officers. The Eddy County Commission and acting warden Shawn Funk are discussing ideas for getting the word out that detention officer openings are available.
Some suggestions include advertising on billboards along state highways, retaining a specialist to recruit in markets with high unemployment and offering to pay moving expenses.
