Couple Faces Drug, Child Abuse Charges

SANTA FE — A northern New Mexico couple — already on probation from a 2008 incident where their child died from ingesting cocaine — were arrested again Wednesday in Española on more drug and child abuse charges.

Rose Garcia, who is pregnant, and her boyfriend Joe Martinez, both 30 and of Velarde, had two young children in their car when they were arrested outside a fast food restaurant after authorities found Garcia to be in possession of more than 5 grams of cocaine, according to State Police Lt. Robert McDonald.

Garcia was hiding the packages of drugs in her vagina. The couple’s son and daughter, ages 1 and 2, were taken into the care of the state Children, Youth and Families Department after their parents were arrested, according to McDonald.

“They don’t get it,” said McDonald of the couple. “That’s just their lifestyle.”

According to State Police and the Corrections Department, Garcia and Martinez were spotted by state Probation and Parole officers as they were parked in a truck outside a Sonic drive-through about 10 a.m. Wednesday. The officers, who became suspicious because the couple had been parked for a while without ordering any food, pulled over the pair as they tried to drive away.

The officers saw Garcia “apparently trying to hide stuff as they were being pulled over,” McDonald said. A warrant was obtained to search Garcia, but she eventually admitted that she was holding the drugs for Martinez. Police said Garcia was hiding almost 6 grams of cocaine packets inside her vagina.

Garcia and Martinez were each charged with cocaine possession with the intent to distribute the drug, as well as two counts of child abuse.
