UPDATED: Hole Where Boy Died Likely Drilled In The ’40s

CARLSBAD — State engineers say it appears a hole where a Carlsbad boy died is an old water well that was never used and was most likely drilled in the 1940s.

State engineers concluded that because the well is not on file with the state, it probably dated earlier than 1947, before there were such requirements, the Carlsbad Current-Argus reports.

Authorities said the well is 32 feet deep, adding that engineers believe the well was never completed, because the current water table in the area is deeper than 100 feet.

As of Tuesday afternoon, no charges or sanctions had been issued against the property owner, who police say has been cooperating.

Four-year-old Samuel Jones fell into the hole Saturday. He was discovered Sunday, and his body was recovered Monday morning.
