Meeting Gives Gardening Tips

........................................................................................................................................................................................

It’s not quite warm enough to pull out the gardening tools and head outdoors, but it’s the perfect time to start planning.

The Compadres de Corrales monthly meeting this Tuesday will feature tips on successfully growing vegetables in the Southwestern climate.

The meeting will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the San Gabriel Episcopal Church, 4908B Corrales Road.

Sandoval County master gardener Loren Meinz has been growing vegetables for most of his life and will share what he knows. He will share the best type of vegetables for New Mexico’s climate and soil and offer tips and tricks for growing vegetables in a home garden. He will also offer advice on how to handle pesky critters that can ruin a good crop, such as the leaf hopper and tomato hookworm.

Compadres de Corrales member Judith Newby said although it’s still to cold to plant outdoors, people can be getting ready for the growing season.

“You should be thinking about what you want to grow and where you want to grow it,” she said. “And whether you need to treat the soil.”

She said the last frost in the Heights and West Side are in mid-April, while the last frost in the valley is early May but people could start their gardens indoors.

Compadres de Corrales is a social and civic organization started in the mid-1990s to welcome newcomers to the village.

It meets the third Tuesday of every month, from September through May. The group also holds social events for its members, including parties and outings to places like museums.

Newby said the group is a good way to meet other people who live in Corrales.

For more information, contact Newby at juditha.newby@gmail.com. The presentation is free and open to the public.
