UPDATED: Cleveland High Student Identified

........................................................................................................................................................................................

The V. Sue Cleveland High student killed in a car wreck this morning was Adrian Garcia, a sophomore who was a wide receiver and cornerback for the school’s junior varsity football team.

“He was always laughing and smiling,” coach Robert Garza said. “He seemed pretty quiet but he was a jokester and fun to be around.”

Garza said he saw some of Garcia’s teammates crying this morning as they learned the news.

Rio Rancho Public Schools officials say a student at V. Sue Cleveland died in the crash that occurred early this morning near the school. Kim Vesely, a spokeswoman for the district said they are not releasing the name of the student and are deferring that to the police.

Principal Scott Affentranger said the boy was a sophomore at the school and a member of the junior varsity football team.

“He was a pretty popular kid and a lot of the student body knew him,” he said.

Affentranger said many students were shaken up, some very upset. He said the school called their parents and allowed the students to go home.

Counselors and social workers are being made available to students to deal with the tragedy, he said.

“We lost another member of the Storm family,” he said. “We are all very upset about it. My heart goes out to the family.”

Rio Rancho police said a teenage boy died this morning when his vehicle hit a pickup truck head-on on Paseo del Volcan, and the two people in the pickup were taken to a hospital in serious condition, KOAT-TV is reporting.

The boy’s name has not been released.

Paseo del Volcan has been closed in both directions between U.S. 550 and Iris Road for several hours and is likely to remain closed to traffic for several more hours, police told Action 7 News.

Another crash involving four vehicles occurred about a quarter-mile north of the fatal collision, but only one person was reported to be hurt, according to KOAT-TV.

9:05am — Multi-Car Crash Slows I-40 East

A crash involving several vehicles between 6th and 4th streets on eastbound Interstate 40 has the right lane and right shoulder blocked and has traffic backed up past Rio Grande, according to KKOB’s traffic reporter Gemma Knight.

Earlier crashes on eastbound I-40 approaching the Rio Grande and just across the river are also contributing to the slowdown, KKOB is reporting.

Breaking at 7:34am — Part of Paseo del Volcan Closed.

Rio Rancho police have shut down Paseo del Volcan in both directions between U.S. 550 and Iris after an early-morning head-on collision, KOB-TV is reporting.

Traffic to Sue Cleveland High School is being affected, and drivers are urged to take N.M. 528 or Unser Boulevard as alternate routes, Eyewitness News 4 said.

KKOB’s Gemma Knight also is reporting a collision on southbound Coors south of Irving.
