Phoenix-based Shamrock Foods Co. has purchased 45 acres on Albuquerque's West Side to build a warehouse and distribution center, a company spokeswoman told the Journal this week.
One of the country's largest food service companies, Shamrock estimates the center will be ready for operation by the end of the year or in early 2007, said spokeswoman Sandy Kelly.
"We are in the initial planning stages," she said. "We're excited about the expansion and how it will help us to serve our customers."
Shamrock's site is on Paseo del Volcan, north of Interstate 40 and just south of the massive 750,000-square-foot Tempur Pedic Mattress Co. plant that's under construction. The site is in the Cordero Mesa business park.
Shamrock is not ready to disclose the size of the distribution center or how many jobs might be created, Kelly said. Shamrock's site, however, is nearly three times as large as Tempur Pedic's 16 acres.
Shamrock sends refrigerated trucks to more than nine states, including New Mexico, from two existing distribution centers: a 300,000-square-foot warehouse in Phoenix and a more than 270,000-square-foot warehouse in the Denver area. Those sites employ more than 500 people each.
Shamrock scouted for a location in the metro area for about eight months, said Jim Chynoweth of CB Richard Ellis, who helped the company in its search.
A private, family-owned company, Shamrock Food Co. is the umbrella corporation for Shamrock Farms, the largest dairy in the Southwest, and Shamrock Foods, the food distributor. Its suppliers include Florida's Natural, Hormel Foods, Kellogg's, Mission Foodservice, Sara Lee and Tyson Foods.
