U.S. News and World Report has ranked University of New Mexico Hospital and the UNM Cancer Research and Treatment Center among one of the country's 50 best cancer hospitals.
The magazine recognizes the center in today's issue.
"Coming on the heels of our designation last year by the National Cancer Institute as one of the nation's top 60 cancer centers, we couldn't be more thrilled for this acknowledgement of the truly outstanding quality of our programs," said Dr. Cheryl Willman, director and CEO of the center.
"We have worked so hard to bring outstanding physicians, nurses and scientists to New Mexico to serve our state," Willman said.
Of the 5,200 hospitals the magazine looked at, just 3 percent passed its "America's Best Hospitals" criteria, according to a news release from the UNM Health Sciences Center.
The magazine reviewed the hospitals in 16 "specialty areas," including: the quality of the treatment programs, the outcomes of cancer patients treated, the quality of supportive care and nursing programs, according to the release.
Early next year, UNM plans to begin construction on a new 195,000-square-foot ambulatory cancer treatment facility, the release states. It will cost $83 million.
"We are building for our future and we look forward to providing access for all New Mexicans to the highest quality of fully integrated hospital and ambulatory cancer treatment," UNM Hospital CEO Steve McKernan said in the release.
