Mayor Opens Trading and Brags About the City on the Rio Grande

Journal Staff Report
Mayor Martin Chávez rang the opening bell at the NASDAQ on Friday and promoted Albuquerque in brief remarks to the stock market in New York City.
On Times Square, a huge electronic sign touted Albuquerque and welcomed the mayor.
"This thing, for Albuquerque, was just indescribable," Chávez said later in a phone interview.
Albuquerque has been winning recognition for its vitality. Forbes magazine recently ranked Albuquerque the No. 1 city in the United States for business and careers.
Chávez said he told the stock market "that we are a city of great history, tradition and culture, but the Albuquerque of today is founded on new technology. It's a place where people can earn a great living, a place that's leading the nation."
He said it was "one of the best times in my career."
Chávez said it was "the first time in the history of the city" that Albuquerque has been the focus of such an event. It was "really a great thing for the city of Albuquerque," he said.
