The city of Albuquerque and Kirtland Air Force Base want to turn a 92-acre plot of former base housing land into a technology park.
City and Air Force officials on Wednesday hosted about 100 developers from around the country for a tour of the proposed Kirtland Science and Technology Park. The property, which is empty and sees little use, is south of Gibson SE, between Carlisle and San Mateo.
Fred Mondragon, director of the city's Office of Economic Development, said the Air Force wants to see it developed for companies that do business with the base, as well as for research facilities.
The Kirtland Science and Technology Park would remain the property of the Air Force and be leased to users, under the Department of Defense's Enhanced Use Lease program for underused land on bases and other installations.
Under the current proposal, it would remain behind the base boundaries, though Mondragon said the Air Force might be flexible if commercial developments, such as restaurants, want to serve the local community from the park.
"The fence could conceivably be pushed back," he said.
If built, the Kirtland Technology Park would be one of three such parks in Albuquerque's southeast quadrant.
Others include the Sandia Science and Technology Park, a 200-acre property adjacent to Sandia National Laboratories on Albuquerque's far east side and home to multiple businesses and government research facilities, and the University of New Mexico Science and Technology Park, a 160-acre property along University SE that also is home to small businesses, nonprofits and research facilities.
