Verizon Is Planning to Hire 300

Journal Staff Report
Verizon Wireless Customer Service and Wireless Data Technical Support Center is looking for 300 people for its customer service center on the West Side.
The center employs about 1,100 people, but a spokeswoman for Verizon said the company needs more.
"Our projections are to have at least 1,700 on board by the end of the year," Jenny Weaver said.
The company will hold a job fair Wednesday at the center at 7000 Central SW from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Another fair will be held Monday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Weaver said applicants will be able to hear presentations about working for Verizon, take a tour of the center and talk to human resource professionals.
The center answers service calls from customers and provides technical support for wireless data customers.
Weaver said Verizon wants people with customer service experience.
Spanish-speaking applicants are especially welcome, Weaver said.
New Verizon employees have to go through four to six weeks of training before they begin taking calls. But those employees get paid for training and benefits start the first day. Benefits include health care, a retirement plan, tuition assistance and bonuses.
Employees have use of a cafeteria and a fitness center staffed with trainers.
The New Jersey-based company serves about 57 million customers nationwide.
Those interested who cannot make it to the job fair can apply for a job online at www.verizonwireless.com/careers.
