Richardson Announces Education Plan

Associated Press
Governor Bill Richardson said Wednesday he wants to see 10,000 dropouts back in high school by the end of his term.
The Democratic governor issued the challenge to bring dropouts back after state data released this week showed New Mexico has a high school graduation rate of 54 percent.
Richardson said $9 million in federal stimulus funds will be used for the program, called Graduate New Mexico: It's Everybody's Business.
He says he will introduce up to eight proposals over the next six weeks to decrease the dropout rate and close the achievement gap.
Richardson has appointed a task force led by Public Education Department Secretary Veronica Garcia to tackle the achievement gap. White students typically perform better on tests than Hispanic and Native American students.
