Albuquerque's Animal Welfare department just sent out a press release announcing new, lower fees to adopt cats and dogs.

Puppies and dogs under 3 years old, starting July 4th, will only cost $40 to adopt. For senior citizens (>50), the fee is only $30. Dogs over 3 years old will only cost $20.

Those prices include "your pet's spaying or neutering, all vaccinations including Rabies, City license for a year, microchipping and a free, initial veterinarian's exam from a participating clinic."

Last month, the department made it cheaper to adopt cats. For cats under 3 years old, the fee is $30. For seniors, it's $20. And for cats older than 3, it costs just $10 to adopt.

"Animal Welfare is making the change in part to help stem the tide of both cats and dogs coming into the shelters during one of the major breeding times of the year."
