City To Offer Free Reusable Grocery Bags Permalink comment E-mail

In order to cut down on the wasteful use of plastic grocery bags, Albuquerque will soon be giving away free reusable bags through their 'Reuse in the Q' program.

Lucky for us, we get to vote on our favorite bag design. Before you are able to vote, you have to take a short survey about your shopping bag habits.

I'm very much in favor of a program like this. Many studies show that using reusable bags like the ones being offered by the city is better for the environment. Every year, Americans throw away 100 billion plastic bags - only 0.6% are recycled.

I'd even like to see a tax on plastic bag use. In Hong Kong, they implemented a $0.06 cent tax on bags - a survey showed use dropped 85%.

Here's my only beef: the City of Albuquerque is allowing us to vote for one of the designs shown below. Some Journal colleagues and I agree - options 3 (conservative) and 4 (tree hugger) are the clear standouts. But why make us choose?? Offer both - that would be bipartisanship in action.
