APS reports that the lights are on, but phone service still out at some West Side schools.
Power was restored at West Side schools at 8:10 a.m. but phone service was reported to be out, according to the Albuquerque Public Schools Web site. Classes were to begin as normal, APS said. The outage was caused by a transmission line failure, knocking out power to about 11,000 customers, but half those customers had their power back within the first 30 minutes, Public Service Company of New Mexico spokeswoman Susan Sponar told ABQjournal.com. The cause of the outage remains unknown, Sponar told us. The affected area was between Paseo on the south, 14th Street on the north, Ventana Ranch on the west and Golf Course Road on the east, Sponar said.
