Chihuahua rancher and former LDS Church leader released after Monday abduction.
Meredith Romney, a Chihuahua rancher and distant relative of former GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney, was released by kidnappers who abducted him at gunpoint near his ranch outside the town of Janos, about 140 miles southwest of Juarez, the El Paso Times reported.
The rancher's nephew, professional bull rider Rocky McDonald, said the matter had been resolved, a spokeswoman for the Colorado-based Professional Bull Riders Inc. told the Salt Lake Tribune. And according to an LDS Church Web site, McDonald said gunmen shot out the tires of Romney's truck and forced him into another vehicle on Monday, leaving his wife and grandson behind. Chihuahua state police confirmed late Wednesday night that Romney was released, but it was unclear whether he was freed after paying a ransom, according to the Times. Meredith Romney is a former president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints temple in Colonia Juarez, a Mormon colony founded by Americans in Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, in the 1880s, according to the church Web site. The Romney family has roots in Mexico, according to the El Paso Times. Mitt Romney's father, former Michigan Gov. George Romney, was born in a Mormon community in the state of Chihuahua.
