The accidents occurred near Las Cruces, Grants and Farmington.
Three wrecks claimed the lives of four people this weekend.
An 18-year-old Las Cruces man died early Sunday morning after losing control of his vehicle on Interstate 10 west of Las Cruces, State Police said.
Oscar Calderon-Hernandez was pronounced dead at the scene after his 1990 Oldsmobile veered onto the shoulder, slid and rolled over. There were two passengers but no information was given as to their condition. State Police said alcohol was a contributing factor in the crash.
A woman and her daughter were killed in a head-on collision with a semi truck near Grants Sunday morning, State Police said. Oneyda Sanchez, 34, and Oriana Sanchez-Madrid, 16, of Phoenix were killed when Sanchez’s 2000 Kia crossed the median from the westbound to the eastbound lanes of I-40 near Grants. State Police said Sanchez was driving too fast for the wintry conditions in the area. When she reached the eastbound lanes, she was hit head on by a truck driver. A 13-year-old passenger in the Kia was airlifted from the crash scene and is currently listed in critical condition at UNM hospital. The truck driver was checked out at a hospital and released.
Norman Jordon of La Jara, N.M., died Friday afternoon in a two vehicle collision outside Farmington.
State Police said Jordan was a passenger in a car that attempted to cross U.S. 550 without yielding. The car was hit broadside by an oncoming pickup truck and Jordan was thrown from the car and killed. The driver and another passenger in the car were in comas as of Sunday night, and the driver and passenger of the pickup were treated and released from the scene. Failing to wear seatbelts, failing to yield right away and alcohol are being listed as contributing factors in the crash, State Police said.
