UPDATE 5:36 p.m. An elderly woman was confirmed dead in the fire that damaged parts of a home at 207 Wayne NW earlier this afternoon, Bernalillo County Fire Chief John Garcia tells ABQJournal.com. Her name has not yet been released. Smoke inhalation was the likely cause of the woman's death, but authorities aren't ruling out any possibilities -- including that she may have been dead before the fire began -- until their investigation is complete, Garcia said. That should be some time later this evening. It appears the woman was alone inside the house while the fire burned, he said. County, city and Los Ranchos firefighters responded to a 911 call at the home -- near 2nd and El Pueblo -- around 4 p.m., Garcia said. The blaze was put out quickly, but not before it caused damage to several rooms inside the home. Several other rooms sustained smoke damage. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Bernalillo County firefighters are searching a burning home at 207 Wayne Rd. NW -- near 2nd and El Pueblo -- for possible trapped residents. Firefighters arrived on scene after receiving reports that smoke was coming from the single-family dwelling. It is not yet clear whether anyone is inide or what started the fire. Stay tuned to ABQJournal.com for more information as it becomes available.

A South Valley grandmother was sentenced to nearly 100 years in prison for her conviction on sexual molesting her granddaughter, all but assuring that Lovato will die behind bars. Mary Esther Lovato, 58, received 97 1/2 years -- the maximum sentence -- Friday for the 12 molestation charges she was convicted of in March. Lovato was arrested in April 2005 on 12 charges, including three counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor. The arrest came after the girl, then 7, disclosed that Lovato had molested her for years when she came to visit the home Lovato shared with her sister in the 4100 block of Wallace Southwest. Lovato had repeatedly refused to accept a plea agreement that would have made her a free woman but one who would have had to register as a sex offender and served up to 20 years of probation. Instead, the woman known as “Grandma Esther” chose to go to trial to prove her innocence.
