New Mexico Democratic Party Chairman Brian Colón on Saturday threw his support behind Barack Obama's presidential bid - the 4th New Mexico superdelegate to endorse the U.S. Senator from Illinois. "He really does represent what the youth in this country want to see in terms of the direction of this country," said the 38-year-old Colon, one of the youngest state party chairs in the nation. Colon's decision capped months of heavy lobbying by backers of both Obama and his opponent, Hillary Clinton: Colon told the Journal he's received hundreds of phone calls and "thousands" of e-mails since New Mexico's Feb. 5 Democratic presidential caucus on Feb. 5, which Clinton won by a sliver. New Mexico has 12 superdelegates to this summer's Democratic presidential nominating convention in Denver. Six have sided with Clinton, while four are now backing Obama. Only two superdelegates - Rep. Tom Udall, D-N.M., and Laurie Weahkee of Albuquerque - remain uncommitted. For more details on Colón's decision see the Sunday Journal.

Firefighters worked through the night Thursday and were able to prevent the Trigo Fire from jumping N.M. 55. Had the fire jumped the highway, it would have turned into a large grass fire quickly burning up fuel and would have likely sped towards Estancia, fire officials said. Fire officials said this morning that the blaze had consumed about 13,000 acres and was 30-percent contained. Last night they thought it had burned 15,000 acres. Fire officials also said this morning that $6.2 million has been spent on fighting the fire, which started April 15, Winds are predicted this morning at 16 to 23 mph at a southeast direction. That could force the blaze towards Manzano. Emergency Management are expected to tour the Sherwood Forrest area to determine how many structures were lost. Keep reading ABQJournal.com for more on the Trigo Fire.
