State Forestry Division spokesman Dan Ware reports that the Belen Fire that burned through the bosque near Rio Communities on Friday "is doing well for now." "Obviously, the winds are coming up, they've already started blowing harder, and that's a big concern for the day," he said. Hand-crew firefighters will be in the area today putting out hot spots, he said. "If the fire flares up we'll have ground resources standing by to take care of any flare-ups," he said. "But for right now it's mostly just mopping up the hot spots." The fire, the cause of which is still not known, burned an estimated 500-plus acres. A more accurate assessment on the amount of area burned is expected later today. Last night, about nine crews, or around 30 firefighters, helped keep the fire in check. "Overnight, the fire pretty much laid down," Ware said. "There wasn't any significant surge. There were a few hot spots near some residential areas, but we jumped on them real quick and got them taken care of." The overnight crews were being replaced with fresh firefighters Saturday morning. A mobile home and some "out buildings," such as sheds, and a barn were destroyed by the fire. There were no injuries reported. Evacuation orders that occurred Friday afternoon were lifted later the same day. "Everybody's home, the lights are on, the traffic is flowing," Ware said Saturday morning.

Photos by Greg Sorber / Journal Mayor's Dog Ball About 110 animal enthusiasts and their canine companions gathered Saturday evening for the Fourth Annual Mayor’s Dog Ball at the Albuquerque Museum. The event, sponsored by the city and a handful of area businesses and organizations, brought in an estimated $100,000, said city spokeswoman Deborah James. The funds will go to the public schools to raise awareness about Albuquerque’s pet overpopulation problem and the importance of spaying and neutering pets, James said. Last year, an estimated 30,000 animals were brought into the city’s animal shelter, and homes were found for only about 13,000, according to city officials. The fundraiser included a reception, dinner and entertainment.

The tabs are now sticky. What that means is if you click on a story in the Metro tab and then use your back button to return to the home page, you will still see the Metro stories. If you want stories from a different section, just click on that tab. Each time you click on a tab in any of the three areas, the cookie then gets set for that tab in that area. The cookie stays set for as long as you keep your browser open. Once the browser closes the cookie gets killed. ABQjournal has slimmed down and updated its look by adding tabs to help you find what you're looking for on our web site. Let us know if you like it. Let us know if you have suggestions.E-mail us at journal@abqjournal.com Or if you really prefer the classic look, set it as your home page by going to http://www.abqjournal.com/defaultold.htm Thanks, Donn Friedman, ast. managing editor, Albuquerque Journal505-823-3874
