BREAKING: Mayor to Halt Red Light Cameras PDF Print E-mail

Mayor Martin Chavez is suspending the city's red-light camera program in response to state legislation passed today.
The mayor said at a 5 p.m. news conference that the cameras will be shut down within a couple of hours.
The legislation, passed today before the session ended at noon, wouldn't leave the city with enough money to operate the program unless a taxpayer subsidy were provided, Chavez said.
Gov. Bill Richardson has indicated he will sign the legislation.
Chavez left open the possibility of restarting the program but said city officials first must examine the finances.

Legislative update PDF Print E-mail

Legislation to create legal domestic partnerships in New Mexico could be dead for the session, the Journal's Trip Jennings reports  from the Capitol Saturday morning.

The Senate Judiciary Committee voted 6-4 to table the measure that would give gay and lesbian couples, as well as unmaried straight couples, the rights and benefits of traditionally married couples.

Advocates say they will continue to push for the legislation before the New Mexico lawmaking session adjourns Feb. 14.  But Senate Majority Leader Michael Sanchez, D-Belen, a supporter of the legislation and one of the votes against tabling in the judiciary committee on Saturday, said the bill probably is dead.

Gov. Bill Richardson, who wants the legislation, said he he was disappointed by the committee vote and urged a vote of the full Senate on the measure, which the House already has passed.

BREAKING: Eastbound Paseo lanes to open at about 8 p.m. PDF Print E-mail

Good news, eastbound Paseo del Norte drivers.
Transportation officials now say that Paseo between Second Street and Jefferson should reopen at about 8 p.m. tonight.
It was originally set to reopen at 5 a.m. Sunday.
"They're letting the paving cool," DOT district spokesman Phil Gallegos said just before 7 p.m.
"We had a good run, no quirks. No surprises -- nothing like last week, where we didn't know exactly what we were going to run into when we got down there," Gallegos said. "It was just a matter of going down as deep as we had to to get out whatever saturated dirt was in there, and we were able to do that."
The eastbound area had been shut since 8 p.m. Friday.
Crews needed to repair the road after a waterline break occurred under the westbound lanes last weekend.
The break closed the westbound lanes of the major east-west road for three days and necessitated the repair of the adjacent eastbound lanes.
Crews with the Albuquerque-Bernalillo County Water Utility Authority a week ago dug up a chunk of Paseo del Norte so that repairs could be made to a 16-inch concrete pipe that had crumbled beneath the road.
The cause of the break seems to be corrosion, according to the authority. Water from the leak saturated the ground, and a sinkhole formed in the road.
