You know it's election season when the yard signs go up for local races and the endorsements start arriving in your inbox. AFSCME, which represents thousands of local-government employees, just released its endorsements for Bernalillo County races. In the Democratic primary, the union is backing: --Maggie Toulouse Oliver for county clerk. Toulouse Oliver was appointed to the job last year. She faces Realtor Ambrose Esteban Chavez in the June primary. --Teresa Cordova in County Commission District 2, which covers the South Valley. Cordova, the incumbent, faces former county parks director Art De La Cruz and activist Andrew Leo Lopez in the primary. --Deanna Archuleta in commission District 3 and Patrick Padilla for treasurer. Neither faces ballot opposition in the primary.

The Launchpad Night Club could be rocking again in six weeks. Owner Joe Anderson said he may have to build a new wall in the meantime, plus fix some sound equipment and make code improvements. The club is one of three establishments hit by the Golden West fire last month. Volunteers are now cleaning up El Rey Theater in hopes of reopening it soon. The roof collapsed at Golden West, however, so its future is unclear. Anderson said he hopes the Launchpad can start having shows again around May 1.

My colleague Sean Olson reports that the city of Albuquerque took control of El Vado Motel today after obtaining a court order. City officials said today's action allows them to enter the property and take steps to ensure the historic motel doesn't deteriorate further. The city is also taking legal action to acquire the property permanently. The city is trying to preserve the motel, rather than let it be redeveloped as the property owner had planned.

City councilors this week announced a proclamation thanking The Albuquerque Tribune for its decades of service to the community. The Trib halted publication last month. Editor Phill Casaus, an Albuquerque native, accepted the written proclamation to a standing ovation from the council and its audience. For my part, I talked to Phill briefly afterward. I told him I've admired his work -- both as a reporter and an editor -- for a long time. In high school, I used to read both the Tribune and the Journal. As a budding journalist, I was always fascinated by the differences in how both papers went about covering the news. Even today, I find myself checking the Trib's Web site for updates out of habit, but, of course, there haven't been any.
