It's slow going from Cline's Corner to Santa Rosa.

Icy conditions on I-40 slowed traffic to a near halt all day Saturday.

The freeway was closed for about an hour at 10 a.m. so state crews could spread sand on danger spots, but motorists have continued to slide off the road, said Peter Olson, state Department of Public Safety spokesman.

Traffic was still at a near standstill between Santa Rosa and Tucumcari as of about 4 p.m.

Traffic may remain backed up through the evening, which might not be a bad thing for public safety, Olson said.

"It doesn't look bad out, but when there's ice on the roads and people drive fast, that's when accidents happen," he said.
