Roy Ropinson, general manager of the city/county Water Utilities Department, said workers expected to have an 8-inch water main break fixed by noon at Barstow and Greenarbor NE where a 6-foot-deep sinkhole caused traffic to be diverted from the neighborhood early Tuesday.
The sinkhole formed in front of Desert Ridge Middle School, which was first put on a two-hour delay, then closed for the day. Nearby La Cueva High School remained on a normal schedule.
Water was off for only four houses for about an hour and a half while utility crews searched for the break, Robinson said. The middle school was never without water, Robinson said.
"We got a report a little after 5 a.m. from the police department that there was a river running down Barstow," said Robinson. Police first blocked off Barstow from Paseo del Norte north to Alameda, then narrowed the closure area to between Wilshire and Anaheim.
Repairs to Barstow are expected to take about a week, Robinson said.
