A top Air Force official is scheduled to visit Cannon AFB next week.

Assistant Secretary of the Air Force for Installations, Environment and Logistics William C. Anderson will tour Cannon Air Force Base and surrounding areas next Wednesday, Air Force spokeswoman Shirley Curry told the Clovis News-Journal this week.

Anderson will be making his first visit to the base, which was threatened with closure earlier this year but was given a reprieve when the federal Base Realignment and Closure Commission in August asked the Pentagon to find a new mission for the eastern New Mexico base or shut it down by 2010.

Anderson's visit is an effort "to show his personal commitment and involvement" in finding a new mission for the base, Curry told the News-Journal.

According to an Air Force Web site, Anderson's role at the Pentagon is to run three departments that deal with Air Force facility and logistical issues at the policy level. His office oversees installations, military construction, base closure and realignment, environment, safety and occupational health issues; as well as all logistical matters.

During his time in the area, Anderson plans to meet with Cannon airmen as well as community leaders.
The News-Journal also reported that Anderson will visit Kirtland Air Force Base in Albuquerque after he concludes his tour of Cannon.
