Carlsbad man bound over for trial after seventh DWI arrest.

Charles Paul Cauffman, 49, of Carlsbad this week was ordered to stand trial for aggravated driving while intoxicated, resisting or interfering with police, driving on a revoked license and other charges, stemming from an Oct. 3 incident, the Carlsbad Current-Argus reported in its online edition.

Police say Cauffman was involved in a collision at a Carlsbad intersection in which a woman said Cauffman rear-ended her car after she had stopped at a stop sign, according to the Current-Argus.

Cauffman was observed with bloodshot, watery eyes and had trouble standing up, so police handcuffed him and put him under arrest for driving while intoxicated, according to a police report cited in the Current-Argus.

It was then he began yelling and cursing, refusing to sit in the police car, and after being sprayed in the face with pepper spray he got into the car but yelled obscenities all the way to the police station, according to a criminal complaint.

Cauffman, who remains free on a $10,000 bond, pleaded not guilty to the charges two days after the incident, the paper reported.

Under state law, a fourth or subsequent DWI conviction carries a mandatory minimum jail sentence of six months as well as fines and fees.

Meanwhile, fresh drunken-driving arrests continue to pop up around the state as the holiday DWI Super Blitz gets under way.

Two men were arrested for drunken driving and a several other citations were issued at a DWI checkpoint set up in Alamogordo Wednesday night, the Alamogordo Daily News reports on its Web site.

And a Super Blitz checkpoint set up overnight at Eubank and Constitution NE in Albuquerque netted 11 DWI arrests, KOAT-TV is reporting on its Web site.

Police said they would be setting up another DWI checkpoint tonight in the Northeast Heights, but declined to say where, according to TheNewMexicoChannel.com.

And for citizens who want to help get drunken drivers off the road, there's the newly instituted DrunkBuster hotline at 1-877-DWI-HALT (1-877-394-4258).
