Cats who survived flood, near-starvation make it to Ruidoso.
It's a truly incredible journey. Five felines who've seen it all -- floods following Hurricane Katrina, homelessness and near-starvation, then being trapped and transported to New Mexico's High Country -- will be housed temporarily at the animal shelter run by the Humane Society of Lincoln County, the Ruidoso News is reporting on its Web site. The five, who were rescued by the Utah-based Best Friends Animal Society's Hurricane Relief program, were brought from Tylertown, Miss., to New Mexico by Ruidoso resident Annie Williams, the paper reported. The cats are tagged with numbers and physical descriptions, along with records of vaccinations, where they were found and what treatment they have received. If they are not reclaimed by their owners, they will be put up for adoption on March 19, according to the paper. For more information, call the shelter at (505) 257-9841 or stop by the facility on Gavilan Canyon Road from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
